Map/Adirondack Chairs
America's
renowned Adirondack Chair first appeared in 1903 in the Adirondacks of
New York state. The original design is attributed to a Thomas Lee because
he wanted a unique lawn chair for his summer home. He built numerous
prototypes and tested them on his family. All of his designs were made using
eleven pieces of wood, all cut from a single board, and included the wide
armrests that have become one of the most notable features of the Adirondack
style. His chair had a straight back and seat, which were slanted to offer
better seating on the steep mountain inclines common to the area.
After deciding upon his final design, Lee lent the chair design plans to a friend and hunting companion, Harry Bunnell, who was a local carpenter and in need of off-season income. He decided that Lee's chair would be in high demand by Westport's summer residents. Unbeknownst to Lee, Harry decided to file for a U.S. patent, which was granted in 1905. For the next two decades, Mr. Bunnell manufactured his "Westport plank chair" out of hemlock and basswood, signed his creations and offered two basic colors of brown or green.
The Canadian name (Adirondack) is from a region in southern Ontario near Toronto. An Adirondack chair (a Muskoka chair in Canada) is a type of chair used primarily in an outdoors setting.

The Adirondack "plank chair" evolved into a staple of garden furniture that can be found on porches and lawns across America. Today's Adirondack Chairs have been modified to feature rounded backs and contoured seats. The style has also been incorporated into other furniture pieces such as gliders, love seats and chaise lounges. |
